Avoid overloading your washing machine. The clothes will wash a lot better if there is room for them to circulate. Keep your washer clean. Occasionally pour a gallon of distilled vinegar into the washer and using warm water, let the machine run through a wash and rinse cycle. The vinegar will cut soap residue in hoses and leave the washer nice and clean.
Taking a sniff test of the recently (or not so recently) pile of dirty clothes is not "doing laundry"!
